V době dočasné nepřítomnosti inspektora Breckenrieda se do jeho kanceláře nastěhuje detektiv Watts. Ten údajně musel z osobních důvodů odejít z Policejní stanice l, skutečné důvody nejsou známy. Paní Frizzelové někdo otrávil jejího čtyřnohého miláčka Horáce. Nejspíše to způsobil někdo z torontských majitelů výstavních psů.
